Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Tax)

HOW TO APPLY

What inspired you to enrol in your BCom?

I worked for 25 years in insurance as well as running my own business for a time. I became passionate about business advisory, and accounting makes the most sense for pursuing that. I鈥檝e loved it even more than I thought I would. I鈥檓 having a ball!

What aspects are you loving most?

I鈥檝e met so many great people, right from my very first class. There鈥檚 such a variety of backgrounds and ages here, it's really neat. I鈥檓 inspired by the people here. It's a great atmosphere.

Why did you choose UC?

I could have studied online, but the UC business School has a very good reputation and that was important to me. Having that recognition will put me in good stead as a job applicant.

How is it being an older student?

I thought I was going to stick out like a sore thumb, but I haven't. You're just a student like everybody else, and everybody treats you that way.

When you graduate, do you think your age will help or hinder you?

I work as a student in a small accounting office at the moment, and my age is absolutely not an issue. Other accountants I鈥檝e spoken to don鈥檛 see it as an issue either. I鈥檓 over 50 and I鈥檝e never had trouble getting a job. I think it鈥檚 about the person. If you want it, anything鈥檚 possible.

Tell us about the extracurricular stuff on offer at UC.

The thing I'm most excited about being involved in is the mentoring program. I鈥檝e loved my time here so much I really want to help others have a good experience too. You can't underestimate the value of having good connections and support right from the start.

How do you feel for having made the leap?

Brilliant. I'm so glad to be here. I wish I鈥檇 done it 15 years ago, but I was too busy raising children at the time. I told my mum I wasn't going to wait I was 60, so here I am! Mind you, I have a friend who鈥檚 that age and is getting his law degree. He鈥檚 passionate about it and that's what matters. I always tell my kids, find something you enjoy doing and you'll never work a day in your life.

Life lesson learned through this experience?

Don't put yourself in a box. Being an older student has been so completely different to what I thought it would be. You don't know what you're capable of until you try.
