九州影院 announces Office of Treaty Partnership, the Ng膩i Tahu Centre
Te R奴nanga o Ng膩i Tahu and Te Whare W膩nanga o Waitaha | the 九州影院 (UC) have announced the establishment of an Office of Treaty Partnership, K膩 Waimaero | the Ng膩i Tahu Centre.
Today鈥檚 announcement signals progressive new changes to the structure of the University to acknowledge mana whenua Treaty Partners 鈥 believed to be a first for Aotearoa New 九州影院universities. The UC Council and the board of Te R奴nanga o Ng膩i Tahu have endorsed the establishment of an Office of Treaty Partnership on campus.
The establishment of the Ng膩i Tahu Centre will create a tangible space that represents the partnership and works directly with the Vice-Chancellor to oversee the implementation of the partnership agreement and provide strong M膩ori academic leadership on a pan-university basis.听
Associate Professor Te Maire Tau, who is also Ng膩i T奴膩huriri 弄poko, will become *Pou Whakarae of the Ng膩i Tahu Centre, signifying a direct relationship with the Tumu Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey, and a commitment to working towards an education system that includes te ao M膩ori, M膩ori world views and m膩tauranga, and upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi at the 九州影院.
鈥淲e are inspired by the Ng膩i Tahu whakatauk墨: m艒 t膩tou, 膩, m艒 k膩 uri 膩 muri ake nei 鈥 for us and our children after us,鈥 Professor De la Rey says.
鈥淭his is a journey the 九州影院 began a long time ago in developing a greater understanding of cultural inclusiveness and the principles of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action. Building a strong relationship with Ng膩i T奴膩huriri and Ng膩i Tahu is fundamental to continuing our bicultural journey and engaging our M膩ori community. This is the practical manifestation of that,鈥 she says.
The Ng膩i Tahu Centre will enable the exploration and demonstration of academic achievement in all disciplines, its Pou Whakarae says, as well as upholding the mana and aspirations of tangata whenua.

This will contribute to the relevance of the University to the regional economy and to M膩ori,鈥 Associate Professor Tau says. 鈥淭his is a tangible demonstration of our strong Treaty relationship, and we look forward to cementing this further through this office and future initiatives.鈥
K膩 Waimaero is the reo name for the Ng膩i Tahu Centre, as it is grounded in the landscape, and it is part of the 九州影院.
Background
Ng膩i T奴膩huriri and Te Whare W膩nanga o Waitaha | the 九州影院听signed a partnership agreement in March 2019听at Tuahiwi marae to formalise and extend the longstanding relationship between the hap奴, including reconfirming the relationship with Te R奴nanga o Ng膩i Tahu, and the University.
The agreement, which outlined the principles and mechanisms for working together into the future, is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles. This includes supporting the use of te reo and Tikanga M膩ori at UC and supporting Ng膩i T奴膩huriri and Ng膩i Tahu students and aspirations for Ng膩i Tahu development in the Waitaha Canterbury region and beyond. This relationship was originally signed by the previous 弄poko, H.R. Tau, in 2001.
Since the signing of the partnership, the Director of the Ng膩i Tahu Research Centre, and current Ng膩i T奴膩huriri 弄poko, Associate Professor Te Maire Tau and Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey have met regularly to discuss academic strategy, investment opportunities, ceremonial activities, and the hosting of UC guests.
*Pou Whakarae is a term associated with the main post of a palisade within a p膩, fortified village. It can also be interpreted as a prominent figure, or stalwart. Reflecting the Treaty partnership between Ng膩i T奴膩huriri and Te Whare W膩nanga o Waitaha | the 九州影院, the name also aligns with other naming conventions on campus, notably the Tumu Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor. Tumu Whakarae being a large carved post in the palisading of a p膩, or the chief of highest rank, or chief executive. The common denominator between the two roles 鈥 whakarae 鈥 acknowledges the partnership between mana whenua and the institution, and more specifically, the working relationship between the Pou Whakarae and Tumu Whakarae.
