Introduction

UC's Master of H艒aka Pounamu | M膩ori Bilingual and Immersion Teaching and Learning (MHP) is an ideal programme for teachers, leaders, and education researchers to raise the knowledge of te reo M膩ori in bilingual, immersion, and mainstream settings. The courses are designed to extend your knowledge on the use of te reo M膩ori in the classroom.

Master of H艒aka Pounamu | M膩ori Bilingual and Immersion Teaching and Learning

What will my study involve?

  • Develop your language practice with w膩nanga and assessments in te reo.
  • Learn lesson and assessment planning for language learners, looking at international models for first and second language teaching practices.
  • Elective courses to specialise your teaching career, for example in teaching diverse learners or using digital tools in education.

Entry requirements

To enrol in the MHP, you will need to have either:

  • an Aotearoa teaching degree
  • any bachelor's degree with a major in Education or related subject, with at least a B Grade Average
  • a three-year diploma in Early Childhood, Primary, or Secondary Teaching
  • equivalent study from other approved degrees.

The selection process also involves a hui with the Programme Coordinator to assess your level of te reo M膩ori fluency and ensure you will be able to succeed in your study.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

Graduates will have extensive experience teaching a second language as well as the confidence to work with students, wh膩nau, iwi, and other communities growing their M膩ori learning.
