The School of Biological Sciences is housed in a modern, custom-designed building and boasts research and teaching facilities to international standards.
Ecology laboratories are equipped to measure听environmental parameters at the macro and听micro levels. They include seawater, Antarctic听and freshwater aquaria, as well as environmental听chambers with controlled light and temperature.
A large microscopy facility is also available for听sorting and identifying organisms.
Animal physiological laboratories contain听research equipment for neurophysiology, ion and听water regulatory physiology, cardiac, respiratory听and exercise physiology.
Molecular genetics and molecular biology听research laboratories are fully equipped for DNA,听RNA and protein analysis, recombinant DNA听techniques, real-time PCR and microinjection of听macromolecules into cells. We also house the听Canterbury Sequencing Facility and Ancient DNA laboratory.
We have a microscopy facility which includes a听confocal microscope.听
An extensive plant herbarium and insect听collection are housed in specialist facilities.听Plant physiology laboratories have research听equipment for transgenic plant production,听including comprehensive plant growth rooms听and greenhouse facilities.听
Biochemistry and biotechnology labs house听advanced tools for the study of macro-molecular听structure and enzyme function.
Microbiology laboratories have equipment to听study the genetics, physiology and biochemistry听of a diverse range of microbes.
The school has a computational cluster for high-performance applications such as bioinformatics听and ecological modelling. Researchers can also access time on super computers too.
