Introduction

Through this specialisation you will learn to engage with ideas that have shaped today鈥檚 world during the course of history and examine Aotearoa New Zealand鈥檚 bicultural society in a global context.

Knowing a second language greatly increases your competitiveness in the global job market and serves as a gateway to cross-cultural cultural awareness and communication.

  • Choose from courses based on your specific interests and industry you wish to work in 鈥 history, literature, film, and language.

Courses

Global Societies and Cultures specialisation

UC offers a specialisation in Global Societies and Cultures within the Bachelor of Arts. Specialisations group courses from different subjects into a central theme.

Within your first and second year, you will be required to complete language courses selected from:

You can choose to continue to advanced language courses in your final year, and/or complete historical, political, and cultural studies on a region of interest.

The following courses are required throughout your degree:

100-level

  • Two language courses from your chosen language
  • One course chosen from these options

200-level

  • 30 points of language courses from your chosen language
  • Four courses chosen from these options and any 200-level non-language course from your language subject, with no more than two courses in the same subject

300-level

  • Three courses chosen from these options and any 300-level courses from your language subject, with no more than two courses in the same subject

Global Societies and聽Cultures

Career opportunities

This degree pathway can lead to a range of careers in history, society, and culture. Your study experiences will give you the knowledge to work in many industries in Aotearoa and聽abroad.
