Meet our Kaitoko | Research Student Advisors, who provide support for our doctoral students throughout the research journey. From your first day of doctoral study at UC through to thesis submission, they are here to help.听

HOW TO APPLY

Kaitoko support - how it works:

Researcher development check-ins听 听 听 听 听

We will invite you to check-in every six months:

  • In the first year, these appointments focus on ensuring you get underway successfully. We will discuss key milestones with you (e.g. supervisory agreement, Confirmation). We will also make sure you are aware of all the relevant support services available at UC.
  • Once you have passed confirmation, the focus will shift to your development as a researcher. We will show you how to make the most of UC鈥檚 researcher development framework to plan your career development effectively.
  • Towards the end of your degree, we will make sure you are aware of all the requirements in relation to submitting your thesis and the oral examination process so that you can focus on getting your thesis over the finish line.
Student-led appointments

Your first point of call is always your supervisory team. But you are very welcome to book an appointment with a kaitoko at any point in your research journey if you would like advice regarding milestones, policies and processes or any situation that you feel is impeding your progress (please note kaitoko cannot provide advice in relation to your research).听听

When making an appointment, please provide some brief information regarding the topics you would like to discuss as this will help kaitoko to prepare for your appointment (this information will only be visible to our kaitoko).

Sharing information

There may be occasions when we need to discuss听your听circumstances with others, this may involve sharing relevant information with staff within Te Kura T膩ura |UC Graduate School and the wider university. We do this to ensure accurate advice and appropriate support is provided and will let you know before we do so. When sharing your information, we are mindful of only sharing necessary information with the right person(s) who need to understand your situation.

Looking after your personal information

On occasion, students may share more personal information. In such cases, we record relevant information in a summarised note format to protect your听privacy.

Reporting concerns

In situations involving safety concerns, where there are significant concerns related to risk (self or others) in line with the听听we are required to share information to help keep you or others safe.
