Minor in Biomedical Engineering

22 November 2023

Biomedical Engineering involves designing medical and healthcare technology. As a priority industry in the 21st century, there's a growing need for life-changing engineering solutions that restore function and help in diagnosis, monitoring, rehabilitation, and delivery of care. Find out about doing a minor in Biomedical Engineering.

HOW TO APPLY

Overview

Biomedical Engineering focusses on creating medical and healthcare technologies. The demand for innovative engineering solutions that enhance functionality and support diagnosis, monitoring, rehabilitation, and care delivery is increasing. This discipline raises awareness and tackles challenges related to global health issues, such as an aging population and the rise in illnesses linked to sedentary lifestyles. Biomedical Engineers will design and develop both current and emerging devices, including prosthetics, implants, heart-rate monitors, mobility aids, medical imaging scanners, and assistive technologies.

Students will engage in practical work involving biomechanics, ergonomics, usability, concept design, prototyping, and testing. The program also covers bioethics, medical regulatory compliance, and provides an introduction to intellectual property.

Students study towards the Biomedical Engineering minor alongside听Mechanical Engineering听in the听Bachelor of Engineering with Honours.

  • Students take advantage of the听numerous biomedical labs听on campus, including biomanufacturing, chemistry, fluids, soft tissue, and biomechanics labs (which include motion capture cameras, force plates, instrumented treadmills, stationary bikes with power output registers, thermal cameras, performance monitors, and much more).
  • There are a variety of summer work experience opportunities in industry, hospitals, and clinics, both locally and nationally, as well as overseas, to help design, repair, maintain, and implement medical equipment.
  • Students have the opportunity to collaborate with many top biomedical researchers听and get involved in the UC BIOMED Club.
  • See the听Engineering听subject page for many other reasons why UC's听College of Engineering | Te R膩ngai P奴kaha听is a world-class destination for engineering studies.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Engineering with Honours

Students will declare the Minor on 听and take:

  • ENME 351 Biomedical Engineering Design
  • ENME 401 Mechanical Systems Design (with Biomedical focus)
  • ENME 408 Engineering Honours Research & Development Project听(Biomedical Engineering Research Topic)
  • MDPH 401 Anatomy & Physiology

Plus听15 points (one course) from the following:

  • ENME 423 Instrumentation and Sensors (with Biomedical focus)*
  • ENME 451 Biomechanics (S2)
  • ENME 4xx Special Topic
  • MDPH 406 Medical Imaging (S2)

*This new course offering for the minor is subject to Universities New 九州影院CUAP approval but is currently accepted with approval from the Lead for the Minor in Biomedical Engineering.

Note:听Students must also meet the requirements for the听Mechanical Engineering听specialisation.

Biomedical engineers have the opportunity to improve the health and well-being of the world鈥檚 population. Their cross-disciplinary knowledge in science and engineering fulfils a growing need in the medical industry which relies on innovative technologies.

Graduates will find work in not-for-profits, industry, government, research institutes, iwi and indigenous health services, and research and development (R&D) departments. They may also carry out rewarding careers in developing countries in need of better healthcare systems.

Other examples include equipment technicians, data information scientists, product designers, quality assurance (QA) testers, advisors, researchers, and biostatisticians.

The Aotearoa New 九州影院government has identified health research and innovation as a national priority and area of investment, which will lead to more career opportunities in the medical industry in the near future.
