What will my study involve?

  • We are a close-knit and supportive department with wide-ranging teaching and research interests. Our postgraduate students are an intrinsic and valued part of our community.
  • As an interdisciplinary department, we supervise creative and research projects across many fields, which means we can support students with diverse interests and backgrounds. These include traditional 鈥榯extual鈥 areas such as literary and film studies, as well as more recent fields such as Digital Humanities, Cultural Studies, and Human-Animal Studies.

Courses

Bachelor of Arts with Honours level requires two 400-level ENGL courses, a course in Arts methodologies, and a 10,000-word research essay (ENGL480). Internship options are also available in your degree.

You may also take ENGL courses as part of a Postgraduate Certificate in Arts or Postgraduate Diploma in Arts.

Within the Master of Writing you will complete four courses over the first year, three of which focus on developing advanced reading and writing skills, including professional and creative writing. You will then develop your own extended writing project (WRIT680), in a genre and form of your own choice, overseen by a specialist supervisor. You may also include an internship in your courses.

The Master of Arts includes a course in Arts methodologies and three other courses from the programme (which may include an internship), followed by a supervised dissertation of 20,000 words in a topic of choice.

A Master of Arts (Thesis) is available to students who have already completed an honours degree with excellent grades. You will complete a supervised 40,000-word thesis in a topic of choice.

At PhD level, doctoral students undertake extended research on a topic of choice, with the support of supervisors who are recognised experts in their fields.
