European and聽European Union聽Studies

Introduction

With 27 member states and 450 million people, the European Union (EU) is Aotearoa New Zealand鈥檚 most significant bilateral partner after Australia and China and is one of the world鈥檚 leading political and trading blocs. Europe provides an important reference point to Aotearoa and the global community in cultural, linguistic, and political aspects.

Your study will look into current events as well as history, language, and culture that have shaped Europe and the European聽Union.

What will my study involve?

  • Choose from a broad range of topics including the political, economic, cultural, and social integration of modern-day and historical Europe.
  • Get taught by members of the National Centre for Research on Europe (NCRE), Aotearoa New Zealand鈥檚 only research centre devoted to study of Europe and the EU.
  • Opportunity to complete an international or virtual exchange with UC鈥檚 European partner universities.

Courses

European and European Union Studies major

For the major in the Bachelor of Arts, complete the following courses:

100-level

200-level

300-level

Plus one of these courses must be included in your options at 200 or 300-level.

European and European Union Studies minor

For the minor in the Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, Digital Screen, Health Sciences, Product Design, Science, Social and Environmental Sustainability, Sport, or Youth and Community Leadership, complete the following courses:

You may take up to 30 points in European language courses towards your minor, including German, French, Russian, or Spanish.
